Why we make end-grain boards
Lars explains how Cloumann started, why our boards are end grain rather than side grain, and why we only use hard maple and American walnut.

Our ancestor and inspiration
Peder J. Cloumann was a great man, and a great lover of nature. He was born a long time ago by a fjord in Norway, as the son of a priest. As a substantial land owner in Norway, he was asked to be one of the signatories to the Norwegian Constitution in 1814.
As a descendant of Peder J. Cloumann, the founder of Cloumann is happy to keep the beautiful tradition of woodworking alive. And we hope that you too, as you see our beautiful products, will appreciate the skill started a long time ago.

Our founder
Cloumann was founded by Lars B. Andersen, who is also the founder of My Nametags, a company that makes name labels for children. My Nametags sells its labels to 148 countries, and has received a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade.
Lars is proud that My Nametags labels are probably the highest quality name labels in the world, and he aims to create products of exactly the same quality at Cloumann: choose the best material, make it properly, and let the finished thing speak for itself.
A fun fact: to prove that the name labels really are waterproof, Lars built a boat out of name labels and rowed it across the Thames. Watch the crossing.

Where we make our boards
Every Cloumann board is made in the United Kingdom, in our two workshops — one in London and one in Oxfordshire. The timber is cut, laid up, levelled and finished there by hand, to order.
